Man missing after Monday thunderstorm By Ted Shockley • Editor • June 18, 2008

MACHIPONGO -- The Virginia Marine Police searched into the early morning hours Tuesday for a New Jersey man who apparently fell out of a small sailboat when an aggressive band of thunderstorms moved through the area Monday night.Richard Best, 49, was reported missing, said Virginia Marine Police Capt. Randy Widgeon.

The search was called off after midnight and resumed shortly after dawn Tuesday. Widgeon said Best fell out of the boat near the mouth of Hungar's Creek.

Widgeon, relaying a report from a Northampton County Sheriff's Department deputy, said Best and a friend were flipped overboard. They got back in the boat when Best returned to the water to get a cooler. He went under shortly afterward.

In addition, the Marine Police rescued a man who had launched from Oyster and was caught in the thunderstorm.

Additional information was not immediately available at press time.

I was ready to toss this one since I've been out on the water when thunderstorms suddenly appear, and it can be a nerve wracking experience. But to go back in the water to try to rescue something like a cooler is pretty darned stupid. At the very least he should have put on a life jacket after the first time he was tossed into the water, and he also should have sailed right up to the cooler rather than swim for it. Thanks, John.

I am not a water sailor, but going back after the cooler is definitely stupid!
