Fence post takes out student

My summary:

Regina, Saskatchewan

The local golf course seemed like great spot for a group of high school grads to gather for an all-night all-male stag party. About midnight or so the local police came by, acting on a noise complaint. The partiers ran off in all directions. But these grads weren't going to let a couple cops spoil their fun.

As soon as the police left, the party resumed. A few students, bored by the proceedings, slipped off from the main group to see what other trouble they could find. There inside the golf course service compound was a maintenance shed, just waiting to be broken into.

And inside the shed was a tractor. With a little effort one unnamed fellow got it running and started his joyride. Police say he deliberately drove at full speed into a chain link fence. Fences don't like that kind of thing. The fence came crashing down upon the tractor. One of the fence posts struck the errant driver, causing fatal injuries. Police suspect that alcohol may have been a factor.

Student dies during party on Sask. golf course

Jun 06, 2008 04:02 PM THE CANADIAN PRESS

REGINA – An 18-year-old Catholic high school student was killed early Friday when he was struck by a falling fence post during a rowdy grad party on a golf course, RCMP said.

About 20 students, ranging in age from 17 to 19, snuck onto the Tor Hill golf course northeast of Regina for an all-male grad party, said Sgt. Carole Raymond.

Just after 3 a.m., about five youths wandered away from the party and broke into a shed inside a maintenance compound. One of the teens started up a maintenance tractor and appears to have deliberately driven it into a chain-link fence, Raymond said.

"He drove into the fence and that is when the fence came down onto the tractor and he was fatally injured."

The 18-year-old driver was struck by a fence post that crashed down on top of him, she said.

The other students immediately called 911. Paramedics tried to revive the teen, but he was declared dead on arrival at hospital.

The identity of the student wasn't released.

Raymond wouldn't comment on how the youth was able to start the tractor or how fast it may have been going when it struck the fence.

Police believe alcohol may have been a factor.

Raymond also refused to comment on whether any of the other teens at the party may be facing charges.

RCMP had been called to the city-owned golf course a few hours earlier to break up a party, but the teens fled.

"We attended around 12:30 a.m. Security for the city actually observed them and contacted the RCMP (and) we responded and tried to remove them," she said.

"We did not issue any tickets or make any arrests, because they dispersed."

It appears the teens snuck back onto the course and built a bonfire to continue their grad party, she said.

A GRADUATE party? I guess they're handing out diplomas for stupidity! Yes, the determination of the would=be "life of the party" and his final Don Quixote-like charge into the fence is worthy of at least the readers' attention! As if life after high school isn't fraught with enough danger...! Thanks for sending this one in!

Just goes to show that a high school degree isn't all that it's cracked up to be these days. Great story. Thanks for sending it in!
