Criminal Cut Up

2009 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darwin says, "Thanks for the submission, Michael, and the amusing conclusion drawn. This was submitted 3x and a more complete account is here. Although foolhardy, I lean against including this submission in the archive because, at its heart, it's simply another criminal caught in the act by a weapon-wielding resident; this resident used an unusual sword to combat the criminal, but the incident itself is fairly common. Although this is a popular story, I think it is best left in the Slush pile."
ORIGINAL SUBMISSION:

A burglar in Baltimore Maryland was in the process of robbing a home when four of the occupants confronted him, one of which was wielding a katana. Undeterred he attacked the students and promptly had his left hand lopped off for his trouble as well as suffering a gash across the torso. He died at the scene.

The lesson to be learned here is not all geeks with swords are unable to use them - the art of swordplay against an unarmed man not being all that complicated - push in, pull out, repeat until dead.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
While self-defense is nothing unusual, and we get many stories involving dumb crooks trying to fight when cornered, either by the police or others, I think this one is unique enough to qualify. Thanks, Michael!

I agree with Bruce! Unarmed attack against ANY kind of armed opponent is very _very_ VERY risky!
