UPDATE: Electrocuted men were from San Jacinto, coroner says

San Jacinto, California, USA 11:20 AM Tue, Jun 02, 2009 | Permalink | Comments (3) http://blogs.pe.com/news/digest/2009/06/two-men-accidentally-electrocu.html#comment-2618668

Posted by: PE News Two men accidentally electrocuted this morning during an apparent botched wire theft in San Jacinto both were residents of that city, according to Riverside County coroner's officials. The victims' names haven't been released. But in a written statement, officials listed the men's ages as 52 and 48. "It appears ... that there was an attempt to steal copper wire from one of our facilities," Southern California Edison spokesman Steve Conroy said, echoing earlier reports by

Riverside County fire department and sheriff's officials.. The break-in happened about 1:20 a.m. in an above-ground electrical equipment vault in an otherwise empty lot at 936 Idyllwild Drive. The bodies were found in the vault after deputies and fire crews were assigned to investigate reports of fireworks near an electrical transformer in the vault. Electrical service was disrupted to 1,600 homes and businesses in San Jacinto and Hemet. The area ranged from Esplanade Avenue south to Record Road and from Kirby Street west to State Street, Conroy said. Service to roughly 60 percent of the customers was restored in about a minute, he said, with full service restored by 2:20 a.m. "It's just a terrible reminder," said Conroy. "Don't try to remove equipment from energized facilities." —Richard Brooks rbrooks@PE.com
