Don't fuel and smoke

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

An (unnamed) 19 year old was refueling his car at a gas station in St. Leonhard (Carinthia, Austria). Some of the petrol ran out of the pipe. He wiped the fuel off with a cloth and threw the cloth into his car. Then he started his car and drove off.

During the trip he decided to light a cigarette. The fuel vapour (from the cloth) ignited in a jet of flame and set the car alight. The young lad received severe burns and was flown to hospital, it is unknown whether he survived.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
We get plenty of stories involving people who do dumb things around gasoline like use lighters to see if a tank is full. But this seems to be a step above to me. Please let us know if you hear if he survived or not.

This guy did WHAT!?! I wouldn't of believed it if the car had been said to explode (please) but I can certainly see a stray spark and concentrated fumes catching the cars interior on fire, esp. if it was an older model. Thanks!
