Man falls under Metromover, dies Posted on Wed, Sep. 10, 2008

A man who might have been trying to retrieve his wind-blown hat was crushed to death by a Metromover car Wednesday morning in Miami.

The Omni loop of the Metromover is currently closed, but the transit system is providing shuttle buses along the route, spokesman Manny Palmeiro said.

A witness told police the man fell onto the tracks at the 11th Street Station at Northeast 11th Street and Second Avenue about 5:45 a.m. when he bent over to get his hat, which had blown off his head. He died at the scene, police said.

However, the station is known as a place where homeless people sleep. It was not immediately clear whether the man might have spent the night under the platform and fell victim when the Metromover car -- one of the first trains of the morning -- started moving.

Miami-Dade police and the medical examiner's office are on the scene.

Metromover cars do not have drivers.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
Whether he was homeless & slept there or just tried to retrieve his hat, it's not a good idea to go wandering on the tracks of an automated train system. Thanks, Javier.

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.
