Survival of the Luckiest

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I am a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa. I am assigned to a health center in a remote village. One of our duties is to travel to other villages once a month and vaccinate the children. After clinic one month we were traveling through the bush returning to our village when a warthog was seen near the road. The landrover was stopped and our hospital director and head nurse jumped out and started chaising the warthog. Now, these are large pigs with tusks. Pigs who live wild in the bush and have to survive against baboons (a man was recently savaged by some baboons near the coast. He'll probobly survive) and hyenas. So two guys probobly won't stand a chance if the warthog decides to turn on them. I stood in the car screaming for them to come back. Finaly they did, dropping two sticks they had picked up. When they got back in and I asked them what they were thinking, they responded that they were going to catch the warthog and beat it to death with the sticks! And these are the guys we go to if we are sick or hurt!

Warthogs aren't the biggest of the hog families, but they can class just over 300 lbs., almost 5 ft. long, and are mean and tough enough to tear baboons apart. The Wikipedia entry also specifies that the lower tusks "can inflict sever wounds." What were these guys thinking!?! Even if they slept thru the "dangerous critters" briefing, there's this guy in the landrover hollering at them to get their tails away from it and back to the vehicle! Sheesh!

Warthogs, wild boars, etc. are known for having rather nasty temperaments, and those tusks can be deadly. Those two are darned lucky the warthog didn't decide to turn around and defend itself, as they wouldn't have stood a chance with just some sticks.
