Final descent, update

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Okay, very sorry for this, but my search did not turn up a previous story, and only after I submitted, I found the reject pile. So I wanted to say this: In my opinion, there were no innocent bystanders, because the German article I read on this explicitly stated that, before the accident, one of the four canoes had already capsized with the people inside managing to swim ashore, so the people in the other canoes were aware of the danger of capsizing, but decided to proceed nonetheless. Also, one of the three remaining canoes turned to shore, while the other two decided to ignore the warning given by the patrol motorboat that was accompanying the ride.

Brigitte, thanks for the update. I'm sure Darwin will consider this additional information for the story. Thanks for sending it in!
