A Grade 12 student from a Vancouver suburb is fighting for his life in hospital after being injured Saturday night while celebrating his upcoming graduation.

The 17-year-old Alex Cheung, A West Vancouver Secondary School student was hanging out of the window of his friend's car while driving through the parking lot of a local mall when his head struck a pole, according to Cpl. Fred Harding of the West Vancouver Police Department.

"It would appear he was seated either on the windowsill, or certainly not in his seat, with his head quite a long ways out of the car and, tragically, he hit a post as the car travelled past. He is gravely ill. He is, at this time, in hospital in a coma," Harding said.

The student is in critical condition at Lions Gate Hospital.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
While the driver was likely partially to blame, the fact that this guy was leaning "quite a long ways out of the car" is enough for me to vote for this. Thanks for sending it in.

Definitely Toss: Lacks Excellence
Sorry - I'm adding this to the list of accidents through alcohol - and I do feel the driver should take a lot of the blame - if you've got a guy hanging out the window, don't drive near poles!

I dont see a mention of alcohol in either the printed story or this submission with that being the case i will vote HM

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!
