Russian dies in fishing shocker

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Published: 5/13/2008 18:36:13

MOSCOW - A Russian man killed himself in an attempt to electrocute elusive fish in his local lake, police said on Tuesday.

The man, 63, resorted to high-voltage cables after complaining that fish were getting too hard to catch near his village of Gremyachka, some 250 kilometres (155 miles) southeast of the capital Moscow.

But the tactic backfired when the current from a 10 kilovolt overhead line instead surged through the hapless fisherman, who was wearing plastic boots and standing on a plastic mat, local police said in a statement.

“As soon as the man put the cables in the water, there was a powerful electric current. One of the cables hit his cheek and carbonised the left side of his body. He died immediately,” the statement said.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first incident in Ryazan region when similar attempts at poaching have had a lethal outcome,” the statement said.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
I'm surprised we didn't hear about this yesterday (when it happened)! A quick check of the current slush pile didn't reveal a previous submission, unless I missed something! Having said that, I think this poor yokel used a little TOO MUCH electricity. 10,000 volts?!? Was he looking to FRY the fish in place as well as catching them? A good DA! Thanks!

The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!
