Shocking Greed

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Central Pennsylvania has seen a dramatic rise in copper thefts since the price of copper has gone out the roof. Copper downspouts have been stolen from churches, copper piping and gas lines have been stolen from vacant houses, and copper wire has been stolen from construction sites. Until now, however, the thefts or attempted thefts have not resulted in any deaths.

Evidently the perpetrator in the story on the WGAL-TV website wanted to join the exclusive club of copper thieves. He failed to realize that electric train lines carry high voltage, and ended up removing himself very neatly from the gene pool when he went to cut the wires to steal them for their copper. The Pennsylvania State Police still have not released his name, to the best of my knowledge.

Definitely Keep: For Darwin's Eyes
I'm guessing they mean no deaths in Central PA? :-) Also, the list forgot "airconditioner couplings from libraries' machines". (True!) I understand that these are kind of common, but that Darwin likes to see them. So, here you go!

For all I know, this is (literally) the 500th mook to die while attempting to steal LIVE copper wire! As common as this sort of thing is, it SURE works for scouring out the yime in the gene pool!

$5 Darwin Fish.
6" x 2.25" Silver Emblem like those commonly seen on cars
only way sexier. A cute fish, floating belly-up, illustrating
the mechanism of natural selection. Minimum order is 2.
