A Screw Loose ...

2008 Reader Submission

Darwin says, "Accepted into the Archive."

ORIGINAL SUBMISSION:

A contract worker is dead after an accident at a communications tower on the North Side Monday.

The accident happened on Northwest Military near Camp Bullis. Police say CPS Energy hired a contract worker to place reinforcement bars on a tower.

They said the man accidentally loosened bolts on the bar to which he was attached.

"There were two other workers up there and saw him sort of lean back a little bit. And apparently, after the last bolt that he loosened, he just fell down 225 feet," explained Sergeant Ted Prosser of the San Antonio Police Department.

Police are calling it a tragic accident.

Darwin wondered, where did this take place? The answer is:

Camp Bullis, San Antonio, Texas

"With a population 130 military personnel, the mission of Camp Bullis is to train security police in ground combat skills. Camp Bullis, a United States Army camp, occupies 12,000 acres on Interstate Highway 10 and Harry Wurzbach Road seventeen miles northwest of San Antonio in Bexar County."

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
This reads almost like one of those cartoons where somebody stands on the wrong side of a tree branch when cutting it with a saw. It shouldn't take very much intelligence to realize you're unbolting what you've tied your safety gear to. Thanks for sending this in, Harry.

Oh boy! The metal version of the old tree sawing story! Thanks, Harry

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.

Autographed by Author!
