Detonator's Radio

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Years ago in about 1970, the family had just sat down to dinner in Melbourne, Australia when there was a loud bang coming from across the road. We all went to the window, but could see nothing untoward, and thus were ordered back to the table. Minutes later our distressed neighbor came shouting for my dad to help. The kid across the road had found a blasting detonator on his way home from school. He knew exactly what it was, and wanted to open it to see how it worked. He clamped the detonator in a vice and hit it with a hammer to try to crack open the shell casing... He survived after weeks of reconstructive surgery, lost the sight of one eye, and would carry schrapnel for the rest of his days. Whether or not he has gone on to contribute to the gene pool I do not know.

I guess your neighbors kid finally figured out how a blasting cap works, albeit the hard way. Thanks for the story.

I suppose there was a grim moral lesson to be learned and imparted at your own dinner table that night (presuming anyone had the appetite to finish dinner after witnessing that mess)! Good PA, thanks!
