Just Say No

2008 Reader Submission

(Lang Lang Australia) Two young men from Country Victoria were looking for new and exciting ways to 'explore and alternate reality' (take drugs)

Possibly at the suggestion of their local peers they decided (using rather poor choice) to get a high by swallowing a liquid close to hand.

Showing somewhat better judgement one of them called the emergency services on his mobile as they tried walking to get help since they suddenly felt a very alternate reality that was not what they had initially hoped for.

Sadly, although paramedics arrived while at least one of the unfortunate pair was still conscious and who was reported to have told his would-be rescuer that he and his friend had taken strychnine, neither of the two survived the trip to the nearest hospital.

(ref:http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23289978-5006785,00.html http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2008/s2175131.htm)

This may be a tad premature since the 'facts' may not have yet been fully investigated but from the two usually reliable sources quoted the story is fairly self-evident and it is hoped a worthy 2008 contender (another double whammy)

Maybe Toss: Lacks Excellence
I would gladly consider this one, but unfortunately the link is a dead-end. Alas, there are a LOT of missing details here, ie the boys' ages, whether or not they did this entirely on their own or succumbed to extreme peer pressure, &c &c. When the authorities have 'done their homework" (and if both of the lads are 16 or older), do please send us the additional information. Until then, however, there's not quite enough evidence to convict! Thanks just the same, Bob!

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
The two URL's provided as references worked for me, and they indicated that these two men (aged 19 and 21) knew that they'd ingested strychnine. Seeing as they knew they had drunk a poison and eventually called for help while just walking along a road it sounds to me like they were in full control of their actions. I'll vote for a DA on this one, although I would like to hear the final details of the police investigation. Thanks, Bob!

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
While not humorous the news stories do collaborate that the two you men were mature and knew they had willingly consumed poison. I vote to consider this one for a Darwin Award and thank you for the story, Bob

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.

Autographed by Author!
