Brain Evacuation

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

(from my archives. 31 years in the ER. You cannot make these up.)

Bungie jumping was the new rage. Off a bridge was the usual place. Several college friends decided to partake of this new sport by jumping off a bridge that spanned a deep gorge.

At the time, a law prohibiting a bungie jump from the bridge did not exist. But, to prevent confrontation, the college men decided to perform the jump at night.

Which explains why no one noticed that they anchored the bungie cord on a rail directly above one of the arched legs supporting the bridge.

The unfortunate individual who jumped would have missed the bridge's supports had he free-fell the usual direction, straight down. But, tethered at the ankles and anchored to the bridge's top rails with an elastic cord meant the stretched cord's line of pull was back into the bridge's supports, where he exited this world.

No one else bungie jumped that night. The bridge now has a law prohibiting any jumping, of any kind.

Thanks for another great story. Jumping in an unfamiliar location in the dark is certainly not a smart thing to do.

OUCH! Well, I thought college was supposed to be a place for learning and not for majoring in stupidity. I guess this fellow took his "final exam" that night!
