feeling tyred - near miss

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Driving home from work one day i noticed an irritating noise and ride quality to my BMW. It felt like i was riding repeatedly over the cats eye road studs on the road, but this was cerainly not the case.

Arriving home i investigated the problem and found a large headed (approx 20mm diameter head) screw in the tyre. The cause of the irritation. The tyre was not deflating at all but i felt that i just had to remove it. So i tried to prise it free using that good old method of brute strength, but to no avail it would not come out. My next plan was ingenious, i would use my teeth to bite the offending item from the tyre. Still no joy, it would not come loose. So i decided to use tools, a screwdriver and pair of pincers. It was only at the point that the embeded object flew just past my head at the speed of a bullet from the pressurised tyre that i realised just how fortunate i had been that i didnt shoot myself with the object through my head as it tried to remove it with my teeth!!!

You certainly are lucky you didn't get hit by the screw when it flew out. Personally I would have gone for the pliers right off the bat and not attempted it with my teeth. But maybe that's why I'm a moderator and you're submitting the story! Thanks, Steve!

Good thing the worst did not happen as you would have a deflated tire to go with your deflated skull. Thanks for the story, Steve
