Killer locomotive

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

There is no English coverage for this story, you'll have to somehow translate the Roumanian papers....

This is a new one, it happened in Roumania on February 5th, 2008 (yesterday). You know what happens when drivers stop their cars on a slope and forget to engage the parking brake - the car will move down by its own weight. What if instead of a car we have a diesel locomotive? This happened yesterday on a private line in the center of Roumania; the guy who was supposed to be riding the machine got scared, used a taxi cab to get to the next station 5km away and tried to climb up the now speeding engine. Needless to say that he fell down and got killed in an instant. His colleagues downstream tried to get the thing out of the line by placing some stones on the track but unfortunately this didn't work either. It took about 30 kilometers to get the monster stopped by attaching another locomotive to its back and applying the brakes.

I like this one but wish that the story was translatable on line. Thanks for the submission

That certainly is an odd story and I'd love to see a full English translation. Hopefully this event is big enough to make some English newspapers. Thanks for sending it in!
