Killer Drill

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I was working in a machine shop, it was a New York winter and because the business was manufacturing and running prototype dust-control systems, there was loads of dust in the air, so the barn-doors were open. It was cold, so I was wearing a scarf.

We had a powerful hand-held angle drill (Milwaukee). The "on" switch was a bar that ran the entire length of the cylindrical drill body. I picked up the drill, so depressing the bar. The half-inch bit caught in my scarf and twisted it, quickly beginning to tighten it and to strangle me. The rapidly approaching bit was pointing directly at my throat, and because of the elasticity of the wool scarf, I couldn't let go as it would have plunged straight in. It all happened really fast, but in slo-mo to me. Fortunately a fellow worker was nearby and he was quick-witted enough to pull the plug, in time to save me from a very untidy layrngectomy and rupture of the carotid arteries - combined with an automatic tourniquet of the neck.

Loose clothing and power tools are never a good combination. You're lucky your coworker responded as quickly as he did. Thanks for a great writeup, Andy!

Gadzooks, close call! Great story and lucky ending! Definitely one to share with the readers!

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.

Autographed by Author!
