Man killed at Las Cruces recycling

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Man killed at Las Cruces recycling center Associated Press - November 16, 2007 5:05 PM ET

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A man has been killed in a fall into a trash compactor at a Las Cruces recycling center.

A man was working with the machine that bales paper. He jumped into the hopper to push a jam through when the machine started to work again, because the jam had been pushed through, he was killed.

Las Cruces police spokesman Dan Trujillo says the victim was a 49-year-old contractor, but authorities withheld the name pending notification of his relatives.

The city-owned South Central Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Facility was shut down for the day after the accident.

Las Cruces police and fire officials were at the scene, along with officials from the U.S. Occupational Safety Health Administration.

Must have been a baleful scene huh? (sorry could not resist the pun!). It has been a while since we have had a story such as this. Thanks for the submission, Sherry.

Definitely Keep: Darwin Award
It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that their arms or legs are the best tools to use when unjamming all sorts of mechanical devices. I've never seen a case where a human appendage won against a machine. Thanks, Sherry!
