Snake bites woman in church

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

On November 5, 2007, Linda F. Long, a 48-year-old London homemaker, was handling a yellow timber rattlesnake during a service at East London Holiness Church to prove her faith and God's power when the snake bit her on the right cheek. Her family is suing the hospital because they claim the hospital ridiculed her religious beliefs and asked too many questions instead of admitting her right away.

Given all the details in the article this certainly could use a much better writeup. In any event, anybody who isn't a well-trained expert who decides to handle poisonous animals deserves what they get, whether they believe god will protect them or not.

"Brother, have you taken up the serpent?" Yes, I know all about the "snake handlers" of Appalachia (read "Salvation on Sand Mountain", a very good book describing the people and practice). They've been doing this for years, and the practice is based on an oft-misinterpreted Bible verse traken literally. A two sentence write-up is simply not enough, and I cannot find it in myself to criticize the religious quirks of these simple folk. They are well aware of the risks involved. Again, it would seem stupid at first (and the practice IS bizarre), but after reading the book I have at least some regard for their tradition!

I concur with James. Having grown up in the Deep South with many relatives living on Sand Mountain, Alabama I know how common snake handling is (and how common the bites are). In any case I do not see where the zealot died. But we do appreciate the story.
