Fighting man, woman killed on I-595 on-ramp Pair in fistfight are hit by car, police say

By Sofia Santana and Joel Marino | South Florida Sun-Sentinel October 26, 2007

DAVIE, FL - A fistfight between a man and a woman in the middle of an Interstate 595 on-ramp turned fatal when the pair were struck by a car in the pre-dawn darkness Thursday, traffic officials said.

The driver of the car did not see them on the ramp from northbound State Road 7, investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol said. And the battling Ramon Perez, 20, of Port St. Lucie, and Marie M. Mary, 36, of Lauderdale Lakes, apparently did not notice the approaching vehicle in time to get out of the way.

It was unclear Thursday how the two knew each other.

Perez and Mary had been riding in the back seat of a Toyota Corolla driven by Ashley Carroway, 22, of Ohio, and had just left a nearby nightclub, troopers said. Unfamiliar with the area, Carroway stopped the car and tried to get Perez and Mary to stop fighting so they could give directions, said FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky.

But Perez and Mary would not stop swinging at each other.

The two stepped out of the car and ended up on the pavement, in the path of a Toyota coupe driven by Amanda Dumont, 20, of Plantation. Neither Dumont nor Carroway was injured in the crash, troopers said.

Investigators do not expect to charge Dumont, Wysocky said.

It took more than four hours for troopers to document the complicated crash scene, slowing Thursday morning rush hour traffic, Wysocky said. The on-ramp was cleared and traffic was back to normal by 9 a.m., he added.

Though investigators feel they understand what happened, confusion lingered for at least one grieving family.

Perez's relatives and close friends in Port St. Lucie, about a 90-minute drive north of Davie, said they had no idea what he was doing in Broward County. They said they knew nothing about the women he was with.

"He used to be the kind to go partying and that wasn't him, to go out anymore, so I don't even know why he was even out in the first place," said friend Chakira Ramirez, 22.

She said she and Perez lately had been talking about "how we're both going to start living right, go back to school." Perez was saving money to study massage therapy, Ramirez added.

A Plantation woman who identified herself as Mary's sister declined to talk to a reporter who went to her home. Dumont and Carroway could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Staff Researcher William Lucey and reporter Will Greenlee of The Port St. Lucie News, a South Florida Sun-Sentinel news partner, contributed to this report.

Seeing as the driver wasn't hurt and these two picked a lousy place to work out their anger they certainly are deserving of a pair of DA's! Thanks for sending this in.

Now THIS would make a fine "CSI" episode! I'm not surprised at the end result, seeing as I've done more than my share of highway driving in the past couple of weeks! Entry ramps are just plain dangerous! Thanks for submitting!
