Hi Wendy & team,

For full news story please the news link below.

Hindu.com FYI The Hindu is one South India's leading newspapers & is known for its Journalistic Integrity.

Some more background info here: NewIndPress.com

I have been reading Darwin Awards for many years, and feel that we Indians have not won enough (any?) awards. With close to 16% of the world population, I think we deserve our rightful share of the awards. Hopefully this story will help reduce the gap. Please feel free to edit as you please.

------------ In the past few months a herd of rougue elephants have killed over 11 people in the border of Andhra Pradesh & Orissa, two states in South East India. An 'intrepid' team of 4 Journalists decided to get up close to this herd of rogue Elephants.

So this party of Journalists without heeding the advice of Forest Officials, go in to the forest in search of the rogue elephants on foot! Obviously they thought that they could out-run elephants! Elephants for their size are surprisingly fast ... much faster than human beings.

When they find the herd, they decided that the elephants are quite photogenic and decide to take their pictures, unfortunately the elephants were quite camera shy and didn't quite like the flash. The irritated herd angered by the flash charged the intrepid team, killing R. Nagaraju, journalist at Andhra Prabha (Telugu language newspaper), they haven't managed to retrieve what remains of his body at the time of writing this story. Photographs taken from a distance show a badly mutilated body. The fact that these Elephants had already killed other villages didnt make them dangerous for the journalists, as they probably thought the elephants would respect journalists.

First they go after a herd which had already killed people. Second they go on foot, disregarding warnings from the forest officials to not go into the forest and finally provoke the herd by taking photographs. How is that for sheer stupidity!

The State government has decided to provide aid to the slain Journalist's family, I guess it is their version of the Darwin Awards!

------------

Thanks for the all the laughs over all these years.

Best regards Ram

You'd think that folks in India would know a few things about elephants, having coexisted with them for millenia! Most, I imagine, do. These intrepid fools, however, obviously didn't! It's very sporting of the local government to aid their families. Here in the USA, all sorts of lawsuits would be thrown about! Anyway, India now has its own representatives in the pantheon of stupidity! Thanks, Ram, that was a funny and well-written story!
