SAN ANTONIO -- Police said an illegal immigrant died when he jumped off a moving train while his friend was injured Sunday morning on the city's West Side.

Officers said the victim's friend, also an illegal immigrant, first jumped off the train and suffered a broken ankle around 10 a.m. near Presa Street.

Moments later, his friend jumped off near the intersection of Driftwood and Ceralvo streets, but didn't survive, police said.

"It appears he was jumping off a train and after the jump, the train sucked him in and he was run over," San Antonio police Sgt. Hector Lopez said.

Residents later found the man's body on the tracks.

Police said they pieced together the men were Mexican nationals when the survivor asked about his friend.

The survivor is at Brooke Army Medical Center being treated for his injuries.

Personally I think train-related incidents like this have become too common (there are a few thousand a year like this in the US alone) but I'll give it the nod nonetheless. He should have been more careful jumping off a moving train. Thanks, Mark.

Mark, thanks for the story. Like Bruce, I was concerned about the commonality of this one. That is, until I read that the police "pieced together" the men were Mexican nationals. How appropriate when the victim was obviously in several pieces! Thanks for sending the story.

While this isn't the most dramatic train-oriented incident I've seen, I will give this one the nod because jumping off a train should be a no-brainer (hoboes have been doing it largely without incident almost as long as there have been trains to jump off of). The train was either moving too fast, or he was uncoordinated, or both!
