Couple Falling off Roof

2007 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Accepted into the archive.
Original submission (one of six):

There was a couple who slipped off of a building in Columbia, SC on Tuesday. The kicker is that these two were naked and their clothes were on the roof. They were found by a taxi driver at 5 A.M. and streets were closed down for hours. It is not stated that these two were having sex and slipped while doing it, but you can read the story and think what you think. I have attatched an article from The State newspaper. Irony is in this story. The female's last name was Tumbleston.

Friends of Chelsea Tumbleston, 21, and Brent Tyler, 21, found dead on a Columbia street early Wednesday morning after an apparent four-story fall, have found a place to grieve: On the two's Facebook Web pages.

Facebook and other social networking sites such as MySpace serve as an immediate way to connect with friends and share sadness. Groups were set up just after the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech; Facebook also has a group set up to mourn the deaths of nine firefighters in Charleston on Monday.

Tumbleston's Facebook profile is filled with heartfelt condolences and dedications. One feature of the site is that virtual friends can post comments to a friend's "wall." One message from Krystal Shrider reads: "I love you Chelsea. You'll forever be in our hearts, we all miss you SOOO much! It's not gonne be the same, but you're legacy will live on!!!!! You now have wings, and will be watching over us all!"

Tumbleston's profile gives insight into the life of the young woman. A fan of all types of music, she also enjoyed cooking out with her roommates, sunbathing and meeting cute boys.

Tyler, who worked with Tumbleston at Wild Wing Cafe in the Vista, became virtual friends with her on June 5. Laurie McGranahan posted to his wall a little after midnight Thursday "Everyone misses you. you have been thought about every second of today...you will always be missed and thought about."

A former USC Beaufort student, Tyler was interested in working out and surfing, no surprise since he listed his hometown as Hilton Head.

Autopsies were scheduled Thursday for the two, who died after falling about 50 feet from the roof of a downtown office building. Police on Wednesday said their deaths were an apparent accident. Clothing was found on the roof. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said the couple were students at the University of South Carolina, but on Thursday a school spokesman said they were not currently enrolled.

Tumbleston attended the Columbia campus in 2005-06 and Tyler attended the Beaufort campus during the same period, university spokesman Russ McKinney said.

The couple were found in the road by a cabdriver about 5 a.m. Wednesday. They were pronounced dead at Palmetto Richland Hospital, police said.
