Just Sleep On It

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A father and son were critically injured Monday morning when they apparently fell asleep in their car after it became stuck on a railroad crossing. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train hit the 2003 Nissan Ultima about 4 a.m. as it sat at a railroad crossing near U.S. Highway 87 and Dowlen Road near Happy, said Department of Public Safety trooper Wayne Beighle.

"Apparently, they were trying to make that crossing there, got off the road a little bit, and got off-centered on the track," Beighle said. "At some point, they tried to jack the vehicle up and get it unstuck, then they went back in the car and fell asleep inside the car, as far as we can tell."

A Lifestar flight crew flew Bobby Reynolds, 74, to Northwest Texas Hospital, while his son, Gary Reynolds, 43, was taken to NWTH by ground ambulance. Both men were listed in critical condition Monday.

As common as grade crossing accidents are, an elite cadre of truly drooling idiots seem to find more creative ways of making them uncommon! Falling asleep inside of a car which is stuck on a grade crossing is about as dumb an act as I've heard of. I am surprised they lived! It must have been a very slow freight which hit them...and at a combined age of 117 years, they SHOULD have known AT LEAST not to fall asleep in the car! Too bad they're still in the gene pool...definite HM here...
