Here's an interesting story I heard about from my family in my old home town of Newport, South Wales, as reported in the Western Mail. A few weeks ago a local lad, who was known as a trouble maker by all the locals and had a string of arrests behind him for car theft, decided that he fancied going for a drive. Walking down a residential road he spotted what I've been reliably informed was a recently renovated and hotted Vauxhaull Nova. Quickly he popped the lock, hot-wired the ignition and was off racing round the sparcely occupied roads on the nearby flood plains. After a few hours he grew bored and ditched the car in a secluded field far away from human habitation, but what about the car? After all, his finger prints were all over it. Quickly he syphoned off some petrol from the tank and climbed back into the cab, popping the central locking so that he wouldn't be disturbed. Soon the interior of the car was soaked and he drew out his lighter to set the fire going, after which he would open the door and make a clean getaway.

The charred remains of the car and its unlucky thief were found the next morning by the owner of the field investigating the smell of burnt rubber.

I like this story, but I couldn't verify it. It hasn't appeared in our media archives yet, and we do have the Western Mail. Perhaps it's too new? I'll go "Neutral" pending verifying the article.

Hi - it's a good story - can you supply a link, so that we can verify it?

Talk about comeuppance! I definitely like this story! I agree with my fellow mods that a link to the news story would be helpful...

I'll vote to keep this. While we normally toss "stupid criminal" stories and people playing with fire around gasoline are quite too common for an award, we rarely get a mix of the two.

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.

Autographed by Author!
