Actress dies saving hedgehog

2005 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

An 21 year old actress from a popular German daily soap saw a hedgehog on the street she drove on during the night.

From then on, a number of errors made her a prime candidate for the darwin award:

- She didn't realize what kind of idea it was to stop the car on a rural street during night.

- She didn't realize what kind of idea it was to walk to the middle of the street during night.

- She didn't realize that leaning down to lift up a hedgehog costs at least several seconds during which it's basically impossible to watch out for traffic.

Instead of simply continuing driving and letting the hedgehog pass or not pass the test of life by itself, she failed the test herself by solving a non-existent problem in an inappropriate manner.

I hope you don't mind the story not being funny. While the death lacks ingenuity, it sure is a case of self-removal from the genepool due to lack of basic "street wisdom" she probably learned at school when she was 6 or 7. And a good warning for others.

Definitely Toss: Not Amusing
Darwin is never amused when rescuers are hurt.

Definitely Keep: For Darwin's Eyes
A better write up than the original

While I agree that this submission has more information, I still agree with Daniel. Whether someone is killed trying to rescue another human or an animal, the principle is the same - compassion.

I have not changed my opinion.

Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest

Hardback. 304 pages. Autographed.
$15
The human race's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, the Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Salute the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself--twice! Witness the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw! Heed the story of the farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag! Cringe at the man crushed by a branch he'd just severed... directly over his head!

123 new stories, 18 full-page illustrations, plus discussions of transgenic animals, the origin of life, and more.

Autographed by Author!
