Kangaroo Boxing

2004 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Kangaroos are cute, furry, harmless animals right? wrong.

It was around 12:00am one frosty night in a small town outside of Perth, in australia.

three mates were preparing to go hunting kangaroos, but decided it would be unsafe to operate a rifle, since they had been drinking.

Alex and roger insisted that they still go hunting, and that they didnt need the rifle to do so. he convinced them that all they needed was a spotlight and a cricket bat. the first and second men would blind the roo with the spotlights, and the third would club the roo to death with the bat.

they set out, and withinn minutes, had cornered a roo. they shone the spotlights in its eyes, and prepared to attack.

in the wild, male kangaroos fight each other by balancing on their tails and lashing out with their hind legs, which were extremely powerful and tipped with razor sharp claws. they generally slash at the chest, abdomen and, of course, genitals of the opposing kangaroo. in this way, the winner would have the pick of females, rather than the disembowelled or castrated loser.

as Alex approached the kangaroo, it must have been able to hear his footsteps. just as he was about to swing the bat, the roo reared up and kicked him in the lower abdomen, then immediately darted off.

Alex was propelled backwards onto his ass, and lay there for a few seconds. it took us a few seconds to notice the deep gashes in his stomach and crotch. the roo's claws had sliced through Alex's jacket, shirt, and flesh. the leather belt he was wearing stopped the claws from continuing downward, and he suffered just mere tears to his jeans.

if not for the belt, Alex may have lost his tool, or even his life. he got out of hospital one week later. once out, he went and bought a shotgun.

By the way, i was the friend holding one of the spotlights...

You would think that 'roo hunters would remember that about their prey... even if drunk.

Going hunting for kangaroos with cricket bats?!? No comment! But this does make a good personal account.
