ER Doc Disables Seat Belt

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Dr. Robert Aranosian, a nationally known emergency physician, died in a one-car accident Wednesday night while driving home from a meeting in East Tawas.

Aranosian, 61, was director of emergency services at POH Medical Center in Pontiac. He also provided medical services at the Palace and Silverdome and at one time was a team physician for the Detroit Pistons.

Aranosian, a Clarkston resident, was driving his 2003 Ford F-250 south on I-75 when he apparently lost control a little before 10 p.m. as he crossed a bridge over the Kawkawlin River northwest of Bay City. His truck rolled several times and he was thrown from the cab, said Sgt. Dave Simon of the State Police Bay City post.

Aranosian, who had trained many emergency physicians and emergency medical technicians, was not wearing a seat belt.

"He had a clip in it where he had defeated the seat belt alarm system," Simon said. "Not wearing a seat belt was a contributing factor in the fatality."

So after 30 years of practicing medicine in the EMERGENCY ROOM, and having seen countless gruesome injuries and deaths as a result of peoples' decision not to wear a seat belt, this man goes out of his way to disable the alarm so he won't be bothered by a pesky "ding" and a flashing light on the dashboard as he flies head-first over it and through the windshield? If this doesn't fit the criteria of someone who should know better, I don't know what does. The only thing keeping this from being a perfect nominee is that he was 61 and already had 6 children. Now if one one THEM dies the same way, we'll have a lifetime Darwin achievement award!

Didn't we have a similar submission a month or so back about an ER Doctor or EMT killing him/herself sans seat belt? Another case of "it can't happen to me, I'm too smart ..." Crunch!
