Extreme Skiing injury

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This past weekend my girlfried and I went to vermont for a few days of snowboarding. It was early afternoon and we were riding the chair lift up the mountain when we witnessed a really stupid act of "extreme skiing". We were enjoying the view from the lift when we saw a guy on the chair in fron of us jump off of the lift in an attempt to be extreme. The chair was about 25 feet from the ground. The snow looked very powdery from the chair and I'm assuming that he thought it was going to break his fall. . I don't know what he was thinking. He jumped off and tried to spin himself around in order to be facing down hill. He slammed into the snow and a solid "thud" could be heard. He fell back and began screaming "I broke my leg, I broke my leg" His buddy that was ridding the chair with him, but was smart enough not to follow ,shouted that he would get help when he reached the top. As we glided over him I didn't know what to say and just kind of chuckled to myself. I figured the ski patrol would pick him up and probably have a good laugh at his expense. The only thing extreme about his little stunt was his injury and the only thing the snow broke, was his leg. He didn't earn the award but with bright ideas like that, it's only a matter of time before he completes the job.

That is the sort of lack of planning that makes for a Darwin, yes. I expect to hear great things of him later...

This fellow does sound like a good future Darwin prospect.

There must be something about snow and ice that makes some people's brains freeze up.
