Never leave water behind

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

35 year old Thomas Sykes of Great Britain died of thirst in the Australian outback; although he had 80 liters of water in his car. Stupid: he had left his car, when he was looking for help after an minor accident - and obviously couldn´t find his car again. Nor help. The water would have lastet at least a week. His car was found two days earlier than he was. He was found 40 Kilometers away from his car by Aborigines who brought him to a hospital. Where he died.

Following is the news clip in German from DER SPIEGEL (www.spiegel.de - of today)

TOD IN AUSTRALIEN Verdursteter Tourist ließ 80 Liter Wasser zurück

If there was an accident, his thought process may have been affected.

The German indicates it was a breakdown, not an accident. I don't think it is really excellent, but I think it is sufficient to let the readers decide.

I've heard of stories like this before, burt walking away from a weeks supply of water isn't smart.

First rule: Stay with the vehicle if at all possible- It's a lot easier to see than you are, and parts of it may still be useful. Like the trunk full of water!

I spent a couple of years in the high Sonora desert of southern Arizona, and anyone who would walk away from a vehicle with 80 liters of water (not to mention food, as mentioned in an earlier submission) is certainly Darwin material.

$5 Darwin Fish.
6" x 2.25" Silver Emblem like those commonly seen on cars
only way sexier. A cute fish, floating belly-up, illustrating
the mechanism of natural selection. Minimum order is 2.
