Head for the Euro Summit

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I read this story on Ananova today, and figured that these thieves should qulify for an honourable mention.

Brussels thieves crash into Euro summit security

Thieves who stole a woman's purse in Brussels drove their getaway car into security barriers surrounding the European summit. Police have described the pair as the most stupid thieves in the country after the incident on Saturday. Several hundred police officers were on duty in the European quarter as leaders met to discuss the future of the European Constitution. The men were shot at by several of the officers after they feared a terrorist attack was under way, reports the Expatica website. The pair managed to escape back through the broken barrier, but were later found in a nearby hospital's accident and emergency department where they'd gone for treatment. A Commission spokesman said the two men would probably have got away with the crime, if they'd paid attention to the news and fled in the other direction.

I later heard that one of the thieves was shot in the arm. I am uncertain of the damage inflicted to the other, but I am sure we'll be hearing from those two again sometime soon.

I don't know - for purse-snatchers to crash a security barricade comes close to the bank robbers who called in bomb threats and then drove past the bomb threat incident scene.
