Industrial Idiocy.

2003 Reader Submission

Many of our family have worked for an insulation firm based near manchester. My uncle (Whom I will call Mike, to protect the idiotic) Was safety advisor for them.

One day, prior to a job at a new factory being kitted out nearby My uncle was making a few of the necesary pieces of metalwork for the job using the industrial machines based in the workshop.

Just prior to this he'd been into the office to report that the cutting machine that they'd been using to shape the sheet metal, needed cleaning. Maintenance was duly arranged.

Now, despite the warning signs Mike decided that he needed to use the machine to finish his work and set it in motion. Because a worn part had been removed to be replaced the machine emmited a terible row before jamming tight on the sheet metal. My perplexed uncle decided that he would have to free it. (Now remember he was the SAFETY advisor)

To accomplish this, he removed the safety guard, climbed up on the top of the machine stood on the BLADE and pried at the jammed parts with a metal bar. The blade, which was kept oiled to ensure that it did not stick in the mechanism began to move, my uncle slipped and his foot was dragged into the gears.

The result was a mangled leg, and his reproductive organs had gotten in the way of a rather large cog and had been reduced to mush.

After many operations he is now walking with a stick (having had metal pins put in to relace the pulverised bone), and doctors have been able to re-create his penis using sections of his own flesh, however, he also lost his testes and therefore his ability to reproduce.

Could use a better write up, but since the subject was a safety advisor, I think that it's worthy of consideration.

Shows you how important it is to have a safety officer around!
