TV BOO BOO

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I was the perfect Mom, cleaned everything, until the day I read about dust collecting in the back of TV's, and interfering with reception. WELL... I am a "HANDY MOM", and I decided to "do it myself!" I unplugged the TV, unscrewed the back cover and removed it, and proceeded DUSTING!

My first mistake was using a fuzzy duster with a METAL core, and second, nothing was mentioned about "THE TRANSFORMER" in the article!

I thought by unplugging the TV I was safe,(it was an old tube type color TV), BOY was I wrong!

I'm dusting away, and suddenly find myself 10 feet across the living room from the TV! It took awhile to realise what had happened, had no idea how long I had been out, but didn't have any "Burn" marks from my mishap. (The TV never worked properly after this!) A lesson well learned!

On the one side, this is not "astoundingly stupid" - not everyone knows about capacitors (as we Americans call condensors). But the amusement factor is high enough that I will overlook that.

Not the transformer- It was the capacitor that bit you...
