by honoring those who remove themselves from it.
Of necessity, this honor is generally bestowed posthumously.

Literary References

"Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying "End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH," the paint wouldn't even have time to dry."
Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time, paraphrased.

"Human beings, almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."
-Douglas Adams, Last Chance to See

"If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?"
-Scott Adams, Dilbert cartoonist

"If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error."
- John Kenneth Galbraith, economist

ARTIST CORNER

PhD Comics, created by Jorge Cham, began at Stanford; like my work on the Darwin Awards, it was what Jorge did when he was supposed to be doing research. If you or someone you love has suffered the rigors of grad school, check out PhD Comics -- part therapy, part gallows humor.

Anthropologist Colin Groves: "Even today it could be possible for humans and chimps to... produce offspring, although there would be ethical problems." As well as hygiene problems, methinks. Read more...
